All wood surfaces should be cleaned before sealing with DeckWise® WiseCoat® Wood Sealer for best penetration and performance. Clean all dirt, dust, loose material, and debris. Remove any oil, grease, grime, algae, mill glaze and mildew and mold stains with appropriate cleaners. DeckWise® Deck & Wood Cleaner Part 1 and Brightener Part 2 are recommended.
After cleaning the wood, always test the absorbency properties of the wood. Sprinkle a few drops of water on the wood’s surface, if water droplets do not penetrate, there could be an old finish still present. Stripping could be a necessary step to remove old finishes and coatings prior to applying WiseCoat®. After any stripping, retest the wood’s surface absorbency when dry.
Approximate coverage: 250-350 sq. ft./gallon per coat. Actual coverage may vary due to porosity of surface.
Allow roughly 2-3 hours to dry depending on ambient temperature and humidity before exposing wood surface to light foot traffic. Climate conditions will vary.
Allow 12-24 hours to pass for a full cure, depending on ambient humidity and temperature.
Whenever re-coating, apply WiseCoat® as soon as previous coat has penetrated and the surface is still damp, but not wet. Back brush any pooling.
Note: Ipe, Tigerwood, Massaranduba, Redwood, Cedar, Mahogany, Douglas Fir, etc., contain tannic acids that tend to migrate to the surface of the wood and may cause discoloring. These tannin stains may be especially noticeable on light colored wood. This discoloration is not harmful and can easily be removed with DeckWise® Cleaner Part 1 as a yearly maintenance procedure prior to applying a fresh coat of WiseCoat®. Thoroughly rinse and do not allow cleaning solution to dry on wood surface.
WiseCoat® Tint colorants should only be used alongside WiseCoat® Wood Sealer, as these products are meticulously designed to complement each other and are not compatible with other brands or third-party products. DeckWise® strictly prohibits and does not endorse the use of WiseCoat® wood Tints in any other brand or third-party products.
The final color and finish of all WiseCoat® products are influenced by various factors such as wood color, species, age, and condition. Wood Tints displayed on the DeckWise® website may appear different when applied to your specific wood. Given potential variations, it is recommended to obtain a pre-mixed sample or test a scrape piece of wood to evaluate color choice and product suitability before proceeding with your project.
While DeckWise® strives for consistency in WiseCoat® tinted products, occasional color variations may arise between made-up products and pre-mixed samples. Possible contributing factors include differences in pre-mixed wood Tint storage times, transport and storage conditions, human error, and variations in raw materials.
The applicator holds the sole responsibility for ensuring that the actual color applied is suitable for the intended purpose. NOTE: There is no warranty against color fading, whether expressed or implied. In order to maintain color, it is advised to do so with a yearly maintenance plan. Depending on regional climate conditions, additional coats may be applied to restore the preferred natural wood tint color.
Clean and brighten hardwoods at least once a year with DeckWise® Deck & Wood Cleaner Part 1 and DeckWise® Deck & Wood Brightener Part 2 or use the DeckWise® Deck Restoration Kit with all the products and tools needed in one handy package. Apply WiseCoat® on decking and hardwoods every one to two years in most applications for desired natural hardwood color.
Maintaining a clean deck or hardwood surface between finish applications is recommended with the use of a mild detergent using a soft bristle brush, and warm water. Mix the mild detergent in a bucket of warm water; gently scrub the wood surface with the mixture. Allow the mixture to rest on the surface for roughly 5 minutes, and then thoroughly rinse the wood surface with water.
